About Globe Roofing

Roofing for new build developments and occupied housing stock, delivered plot by plot to one documented standard.

Globe Roofing is a roofing contractor based at Highfields Farm in Fulbourn, near Cambridge, working across the East of England and the Midlands. We are organised into two divisions, each built for a different kind of client: housebuilders delivering new homes plot by plot, and housing associations, local authorities and principal contractors looking after homes that are already lived in. Both divisions work to the same standard and are backed by the same management systems.

New Build Developments

Our New Build Developments division delivers complete roofing packages on housing developments for buyers, quantity surveyors and construction directors at housebuilders. We price plot by plot, fit every plot to the manufacturer fixing specification and to the NHBC, LABC or Premier requirements that apply to the scheme, and build the compliance record as the work happens rather than assembling it before an inspection.

The division is set up for volume. Hocklawn in Nottingham, a development of 650 units, is one example of the scale we work at. Across the business we run around 12 live sites, overseen by multiple contracts managers who track progress by plot and raise issues before they affect the programme.

Regeneration, Repair and Maintenance

Our Regeneration, Repair and Maintenance division re-roofs and maintains occupied homes for housing associations, local authorities and the principal contractors who deliver their programmes. It is a growing part of the business. Re-roofing a home with residents living underneath is a different discipline from roofing a new plot: the sequence is planned so homes stay weathertight, sites are kept tidy, and residents and the client are kept informed throughout. We take on planned programmes across batches of properties, and reactive repairs that keep stock watertight in between.

How we manage quality

Like almost every roofing contractor working at scale on housing, we deliver through subcontracted gangs. The model lets us match resourcing to the rate at which plots are released, which is uneven on any phased development. The risk in that model is that quality varies between gangs, so the management system around them is where we concentrate.

Before a gang mobilises, operatives' CSCS cards and competency for the work are checked, and subcontractor businesses are reviewed for accreditations, insurance and health and safety performance. Each scheme runs to a single agreed specification covering the tile system, felt and batten, fixing schedule, ventilation and cold bridging details, and method statements are issued in writing. Work is checked at defined stages, not only at completion: first fix, ventilation, fixing schedule and final sign-off, with inspection records kept for each plot. Where work does not match the specification, the non-conformance is recorded, corrected and closed before the plot is signed off. That is how the standard on the last plot of a phased scheme matches the first, even when gangs have changed along the way.

Safety on every site

Roofing is one of the highest-risk trades in construction, and health and safety is the foundation of how we work. Every operative working under the Globe Roofing name holds the relevant CSCS card for their role, receives a site-specific induction and works to our PPE requirements. Each project starts with an assessment of the working at height risks on that site, and edge protection, access and platform loading are checked with the scaffold contractor before anyone goes onto the roof. If conditions change, through poor weather, icy battens or an unexpected structural issue, work stops until it is safe to continue.

We encourage open near-miss reporting across our sites, and the management team reviews those reports and changes working practices where needed. Our quality, environmental and health and safety management systems are independently certified, and the detail is on our accreditations page.

Part of the Globe Group

Globe Roofing is a member of The Globe Group, whose companies follow the build sequence on a housing site from the ground up. Globe Civil Engineering delivers the groundworks, Globe Cambridge provides the scaffold, Globe Roofing builds the roof, and Red Safety Netting installs the fall protection. Where more than one of those packages sits with the group, the interfaces between trades are managed inside one group rather than between separate contractors. For the roofing package, that means scaffold configured for the roofing work that follows it, with lift heights, access and loading agreed before erection.
